OpenAI has released ads mode
When OpenAI announced on January 16, 2026 that it would be introducing advertising in ChatGPT, it felt to many like a logical next step. A cheaper new pricing tier, more reach, new revenue models. But anyone who looks more closely recognizes something much bigger.
For the first time, an advertising channel is emerging in a place where people do not scroll, but think.

ChatGPT is not used to passively consume content. It is opened when someone is stuck, needs to make a decision, or is looking for a solution. Being visible at exactly that moment in the future changes the rules of the game for everyone who sells knowledge, services, or consulting.
From the feed to the question
Existing advertising channels all work on the same principle: attract attention, spark interest, draw users into a funnel. Social media lives on interruptions, Google on keywords.
ChatGPT works differently.
People do not enter keywords. They formulate real problems. They describe their situation, their goals, their blockers. Anyone who appears with advertising here does not show up as an interruption, but as a possible answer.
That is the real paradigm shift.
A new kind of visibility
Imagine a consultant who has been writing LinkedIn posts for years to build reach. Likes come in, enquiries rarely. Meanwhile, somewhere a managing director is asking ChatGPT why their sales are stagnating and how other companies are solving it.
In the future, a provider can appear at exactly that moment and say: "We have already solved this problem for 50 B2B companies. Here is what the first step looks like."
No cold outreach. No lead magnet. No nurturing. Just relevance at the right moment.
For coaches, agencies, and specialized service providers, that is a historic opportunity.
Why small providers can suddenly win
ChatGPT ads do not reward the loudest, but the clearest. Anyone who can cleanly name a problem and offer a comprehensible solution will be heard. That does not play into the hands of big brands, but of those with genuine specialization.
A solo consultant with a razor-sharp offering can make a stronger impression here than a large agency with a broad portfolio. Budget does not decide. Fit to the question does.
That also changes how offerings need to be conceived.
Away from promises, toward entry points
In classical ads, you sell. In ChatGPT, you invite.
Successful providers will not explain their entire service, but offer a first meaningful entry point. A diagnosis. An analysis. A concrete assessment. Something that feels like the natural next step from the question being asked.
Those who understand this do not sell aggressively. They get chosen.
ChatGPT as a quiet sales partner
Many underestimate what it means that ChatGPT knows its users' context, preferences, and goals over the long term. Advertising here will not work in isolation, but embedded in thought processes.
For service providers that means: anyone who makes a positive impression once will appear again. Not as a retargeting ad, but as a recurring option in the user's mental decision space.
That is closer to trust than to marketing.
A new service category is emerging
For agencies, a second layer of opportunity arises from this. Not just running ChatGPT ads themselves, but helping others do so.
Companies will ask questions like: how do we position ourselves to be relevant in ChatGPT? Which offerings work in this context? How do we articulate our expertise so that it is perceived as a solution?
Whoever can deliver these answers first is building an entirely new consulting field.
